4000 Amp Junction Enclosure

Product Information

Junction enclosures are becoming more common with growth. When designing a system for growth engineers must look at future expansion. With expansion, an adequately sized transformer must be considered to handle future loads. In the beginning, the transformer must be physically capable (on the secondary side) to tap to various points in the plant. But as future loads are added and the plant expands in physical size, so too must the transformer taps.

Gilbert Electrical has the solution with it’s secondary tap junction enclosure. Built from rugged 11 gauge steel and rated NEMA 3R equivalent, this unit will grow with the system and last just as long. Junction enclosures gives the user the ability to increase transformer taps without direct alteration of the transformer. By sizing the junction enclosure for the full load current rating of the transformer, a customer may connect the incoming cables from the transformer to the phase buses located inside the junction enclosure. Doing this allows you the room for multiple outgoing taps to various loads. Junction enclosures are a convenient way to allow for future system expansion.

As shown in Figure 1, a junction enclosure connects to the secondary side of the transformer. Since a transformer may have only a limited number of secondary taps, a junction enclosure can be supplied with virtually unlimited taps. This gives the user the ability to plan for growth without the worry of altering the transformer or even perhaps ordering a new one.

Junction enclosures are supplied with a choice of physical size, voltage rating, max amp rating, system type, type of bus and so on. Depending on the need of the system, Gilbert should have no problem finding the right one for you.

Ordering Information

Below is a guide that can help you when ordering a Gilbert Electrical junction enclosure. Following the example and information, you can construct a part number for a unit that meets your exact requirements. Refer to this part number when ordering.

KMJE 6 -4 SB -34 -18 G
Manufacturer's ID               Ground Bus
Add a "G" to end of part number when unit must include a ground bus
Voltage Class
480 V

5 kV - 5
600 V - 6
15 kV - 15
              Number of Holes per Phase
When filling in this number, keep in mind that a single NEMA 2 hole bolt hole pattern can support two lugs (front and back)
Current Rating

bullet

The first four characters in the part number are dedicated to the manufacturer. These letters distinguish the product from other items manufactured by Gilbert Electrical.

bullet

The following number indicates the voltage class of the unit. This must be known so the proper insulation of the unit can be maintained. Gilbert Electrical can provide junction enclosures above 15 KV.

bullet

In order to properly size the bus, the max current load of the transformer must be entered. If the current rating of the transformer does not match the figures above, always order the next available higher current rating.

bullet

Type of bus is for environmental conditions. If the weather is mild and cool, round edge copper bus is adequate. For extreme conditions, tin plated may be required.

bullet

To supply the correct number of phase busses the system type must be know. If the system is a three phase, four wire system, then three phase busses and one neutral bus must be supplied for a total of four busses.

bullet

Given the vast number of loads the junction enclosure may be supplying, the number of Nema 2 hole bolt patterns must be entered here. The number entered will indicate the number of incoming plus the number of outgoing conductors. Always make sure you have more than enough. Note: One NEMA 2 hole bolt pattern can support 2 lugs (front and back).

bullet

Last, add a "G" to the end of the part number if a ground bus is required.
